the ending was NOT it

i really liked the book. it was scary at some point, sad, and it even had my jaw on the floor. (even tho the romance was out of the blue). but unfortunately the last chapters weren’t so good. (SPOILER) i just felt like it was unnecessary to suddenly kill the god and make douglas a demigod. it didn’t give everett and douglas the happy ending they deserved in australia.

I really really loved this book up until the final few chapters. It was creepy from the start, had great pacing. The romance felt a little forced to me, there wasn't much buildup and they didn't really have any chemistry. I loved the magic and the lore, the creatures, the forest. I was really enjoying the ride until the last.. 20%? The last few chapter felt like I was suddenly reading a self-help book throwing "deep" quotes at me left and right. The ending was way too happy and convenient and wrapped up in a perfect little bow. The plot twist at the end was predictable and didn't really surprise me. I know it's a YA book but I expected more, I guess. I dropped my rating from 4 to 3 stars.
