Genre: Thriller Cover: ❄️ Art: Audiobook Meinung: Ein richtig guter Thriller.

Okay, wow !!! This story was so fucking crazy that I still haven’t registered it all in my mind. This book will probably have spoilers !! It’s my first book by this author, but I’ll probably try other books by her some time. The mystery and suspense was definitely there, I didn’t want to lay the book down. I found the plot very unique and interesting. Throughout the book we switch between ‘Now' - her laying in the coma, 'Then' - while everything was still 'okay' and 'normal' and 'Before' - these were diary entries from her childhood. The main character is called Amber Reynolds and she’s in a coma. However, we don’t know how we got here or who’s fault that it. The book kept mentioning her seeing a little girl or imagining a little girl - If I got it right that should have been her as a kid but I’m still not sure who or what that was supposed to be or show ?? Amber has a crazy Ex and stalker (Edward), I got that much. And he was CRAZY - no joke: he put something in her drink and slept with her, had hundreds of pictures of amber throughout his home and some of them he took while stalking her, he raped her while she was in a coma?!?!, and was drugging her on purpose and acting like he was a 'doctor' even though he wasn’t. And Claire turned out to be a crazy woman too😭. One plot twist was that the Diary entries didn’t turn out to be from Amber but they were written by Claire. Amber was called Taylor (it’s her last name, but it’s Reynolds now since she married Paul) , but everyone used to call her Taylor as a child. It also turned out that Paul wasn’t at fault, he neither cheated on her nor did he have something to do with the fact that she was in a coma, I was happy about that😭. The one who turned out to be at fault for the crash was Claire, since she was driving really fast and slammed the brakes while driving to the hospital and Amber flew through the window. Amber was pregnant, but she lost their child ☹️. I didn’t understand the whole lore about Madeline (Ambers Coworker - she’s also been working as Madeline’s PA) but it turns out Madeline wasn’t Claires Aunt she hated. One point where my jaw definitely dropped was at the end when it turned out that Amber poisoned Claire and her husband David with a meal and burned their house down with them in it. Madeline also ended up dead😭. Amber and Paul got the twins (Claire’s and David’s children) and now they’re their parents. I guess we got somewhat of a happy ending? LMAO. I really liked this book, it kept me intrigued the whole time - but at the same time, I didn’t get a lot of the stuff that happened or why it happened and I’m still confused about lots of things but that’s also what made this book so great. So yeahhh🙈.

Period. Das war sehr gut. Der rest? MEH!

The plot wasn't really twisting

Just to be clear: I loved the story and absolutely enjoyed the characters. But! The second half of the book sadly got slightly predictable and the ending was absolutely not for me. (Tbh it was this kind of lazy overdone 'Suprise she isn't dead'-ending) Would've been more fitting if the open end was after the sentence "I never liked gas". So yeah, a bit disappointed about the ending, but the story was still highly enjoyable and definitely something else. Especially the slow change from victim to villain was done nicely - perfect example of how other people can and will change you.

Domestic thrillers just don't interest me anymore. Those unreliable narrators are all the same and the stories are too. This one was no exception and even though I finished it this morning I already forgot all the names. But I was surprised with the last third of the novel. There was a twist that was very surprising, it almost excused the blandness of the two thirds in the beginning. I think it's a novel for people who enjoy thrillers, but don't read them often. In that way the twists will probably more shocking and new. For long time readers this novel has nothing new to show or tell. I do realise though that a genre like this only has so much to offer. Still I am interested in the TV adaption. I wonder how some aspects will be portrayed on screen!

Sometimes I Lie is my second Alice Feeney book this year. Was blessed to have been introduced to her through the excellent Rock, Paper, Scissors when my book club read it a couple of months ago. This is all killer and no filler, I understand most of the misdirection techniques she used in Rock, Paper, Scissors are present here and that this is the progenitor. However, I was still fully satisfied with the results. In many ways this novel is better but scored both a 5. The narrative was expertly woven in short chapters that flutter through timelines. All of them in first person. I guess in an Alice Feeney novel you never really know who is speaking and that a narrator's real name isn't always what it seems. That being said, the way things coalesce in the end for me has been both a chef's kiss. I read this book while listening to the audiobook for a more immersive experience. Enjoyed the narration very much and felt it amplified the entertainment. I'm already looking forward to my next Alice Feeney novel. Highly recommended!
