“Houses are like people—some you like and some you don’t like—and once in a while there is one you love.” Crooked House takes us inside the Leonides family, a wealthy but very peculiar household living in a mansion full of secrets, grudges, and lies. When the patriarch, Aristide Leonides, is murdered, suspicion falls on everyone in the family. As the investigation unfolds, Christie masterfully keeps us guessing every motive and does not let us trust anybody in the house. I absolutely loved the atmosphere! That gothic, slightly unsettling family dynamic reminded me a lot of the movie Knives Out! The tension, the dialogue, and the sense of “everyone has something to hide” were classic Christie. That said, it’s not among my absolute favourites by her but that’s probably on me. I guessed the culprit quite early on (apparently I’ve read too many crime and thriller novels 😅). Still, it was such a fun, twisty read with one of her most chilling endings.
