Wir sehen die Dogs diesmal vor Calais, das nach der Schlacht von Crecy vom englischen König belagert. Eigentlich wollten sie nach Hause, müssen aber nun in der Belagerungsstadt Villeneuve vor Calais bleiben. In Calais befindet sich auch ihr früherer Captain, der dort zusammen mit Piraten eine etwas zwielichte Rolle spielt. Hautnah erleben wir das Leid der Belagerten und der Soldaten vor den Toren, den Hunger, den Schmutz und die vielen Krankheiten. Die Dogs halten zusammen, doch nicht alle werden den Fall der Stadt erleben.

Ehrlich, brutal, pure Realität
Der Zweite Band über die Essex Dogs ist, wie der erste Band, historisch hervorragend recherchiert. Die Schlacht um Calais sowie die Schicksale der Menschen auf beiden Seiten werden eindringlich dargestellt, ohne etwas zu beschönigen. Alle Charaktere haben eine Geschichte und Identität. Jedoch darf man sich nicht zu schnelle an alle gewöhnen, denn das Leben hat oft andere Wege.
