Spanning four decades, from 1968 onwards, this is the story of a fabulous but flawed family and the slew of ordinary and extraordinary incidents that shape their everyday lives. It is a story about childhood and growing up, loss of innocence, eccentricity, familial ties and friendships, love and life. Stripped down to its bare bones, it’s about the unbreakable bond between a brother and sister.

this was a beautiful beautiful book! in the author's note (which i loved, like all the extra content) sarah winman said for her, it's about love in all its forms. and it's about second chances that life hardly gives, but that she gave her characters in this novel. and i think this is exactly why i loved it. the family was so lovely and i'm a fan of unlikely friendships and chosen families etc., and i enjoyed reading about how they all love each other so much. and i also enjoyed reading something where everything turns out good despite bringing change. it's kind of healing. and i didn't mind it being unrealistic -it made the book feel like a fairy tale in some ways. the only reason i'm not giving it 5/5 is because it took me so long for me to read and i had to force myself to pick it back up sometimes as it just didn't stay captivating all the way through, especially in the beginning. still such a great book!!!
