Description

Women are in a bind. In the name of consent and empowerment, they must proclaim their desires clearly and confidently. Yet sex researchers suggest that women’s desire is often slow to emerge. And men are keen to insist that they know what women—and their bodies—want. Meanwhile, sexual violence abounds. How can women, in this environment, possibly know what they want? And why do we expect them to?

In this elegant, searching book—spanning science and popular culture; pornography and literature; debates on Me-Too, consent and feminism—Katherine Angel challenges our assumptions about women’s desire. Why, she asks, should they be expected to know their desires? And how do we take sexual violence seriously, when not knowing what we want is key to both eroticism and personhood?

In today’s crucial moment of renewed attention to violence and power, Angel urges that we remake our thinking about sex, pleasure, and autonomy without any illusions about perfect self-knowledge. Only then will we fulfil Michel Foucault’s teasing promise, in 1976, that ‘tomorrow sex will be good again’

In Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again Angel explores the current state of affairs in sex, the role consent, arousal and desire play in it. It is primarily focused on heterosexual sex and the way these topics relate to women. But she also brings into question rigid gender roles, how we think of male desire in our society and how power dynamics influence sex and sexual encounters. While she doesn't disavow the importance of consent she does raise many important questions on how we as a society handle it and the pressure we put on women to always know what they want and desire. Instead she advocates for vulnerability and the ability to sometimes be unsure of what we want, of exploring together and having open discussions. If you're interested in the topics of consent, power dynamics in sex and gender roles I would pick this up. Katherine Angel definitely brought up interesting new points for me that I had never really considered or thought about before. I’m not sure if sex can ever be good again - it definitely can yes - but the chances to get someone that you can rely on when it comes to sex are incredibly low - I don’t understand the urge for sex or anything in that row so I read about it - same goes for love - I wanna experience it but at the same time I don’t want too - especially with sex the more I hear about it the more it becomes disgusting to me - talking about m/w sex here - in most romance books it’s either ends in the girl becoming the y/n meme and the guy becoming the counterpart or they completely chance their personality like?? In non fiction books about sex it’s usually told that most men just want their pleasure to be fulfilled- which yeah I guessed that already but what about the women? Even studies show that Masturbation is more pleasurable than a men - so why would I ever wanna sleep with one? Where is the benefit behind it?
