„The Wives“ ist ein Domestic Thriller, der mich nach einem etwas zähen Start vollkommen in seinen Bann gezogen hat. Am Anfang hatte ich Schwierigkeiten, in die Geschichte hineinzufinden, vor allem wegen der vielen Charaktere und der häufig wechselnden Perspektiven. Auch die Spannung ließ zunächst noch etwas auf sich warten. Doch nach etwa einem Drittel des Buches hat sich das Blatt gewendet: Ab da wurde die Handlung packend, ich habe mitgefiebert, wer Daniel wohl umbringen wird, und gleichzeitig gerätselt, wer es letztlich tatsächlich getan hat. Dieses ständige Hin und Her zwischen Vermutungen, Verdächtigungen und Enthüllungen hat die Story für mich extrem spannend gemacht. Besonders stark fand ich das Ende: Kaum glaubt man, alles durchschaut zu haben, wird die Handlung gleich mehrfach noch einmal auf links gedreht. Valerie Keogh versteht es, ihre Leser:innen immer wieder aufs Neue zu überraschen und dabei eine beklemmende Atmosphäre voller Misstrauen, Geheimnisse und unterschwelliger Gefahr aufzubauen. Alles in allem ist The Wives ein fesselnder Domestic Thriller, der zwar etwas Anlauf braucht, danach aber mit Wendungen und psychologischer Tiefe überzeugt und definitiv unter die Haut geht.
