This is definitely my favourite book of all the books I have read in a while. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would! Usually I don’t write reviews for books but with this one I felt I just had to write some of my thoughts down. (I apologise if it is a bit all over the place.) The book is about the story of how the Brothers Grimm collected their famous fairy tales but more importantly it is about Dortchen Wild, the girl that grew up across the street from them and knew the family all their life. This book drew me in right from the start. I hadn't heard of it before I picked it up but the title as well as the description was so intrigued that I started reading it on the same day. It is the first book by Kate Forsyth that I have read but it definitely won't be the last one. I really liked the writing style and even though the book spans a time period of 20 years it never felt like it was moving too slow (covering so many years within one book) or too fast (to hurry the story along through the years). It is not a happy story, at times it is incredible sad not just because of what happens to Dortchen herself during her life but also because of the complete historical background of the time which in this story is not just background but terribly important to the way the story develops. Although the story gets quite dark in some places and definitely references the original fairytales which can be dark and gruesome it was absolutely fascinating to read and I couldn’t put the book down for long times. Despite how dark and sad the book sometimes was it made me remember the times when I read the Grimms Fairytales while I was a child and actually bringing back lovely memories. Furthermore its made me want to learn more about the Grimm Brothers. I am really intrigued by their life now and keen on picking up some more books about them. I picked this book up from the library but I know at some point I will buy my own copy so that I can read it and have it as part of my collection!
