More Than Just a “Nice” Box

I picked this book up pretty randomly and wasn’t expecting a lot — but I ended up really enjoying it. It’s about Ava, who’s super introverted and organized to the point that her life is basically broken into 30-minute blocks. After a huge personal loss, she’s just kind of… existing, mostly through her work at a company called Städa (very IKEA vibes). Then her company gets a new boss, Matt — the complete opposite of her. Loud, outgoing, super enthusiastic about everything. At first, he throws her totally off balance, but slowly he draws her out of her shell, and the book turns into this really subtle and interesting exploration of grief, trauma, and how people start to come back to life after a loss. I really liked Ava as a character. I saw a lot of myself in her introversion and the way she uses routine as a kind of coping mechanism. The story isn’t fast-paced, and not a ton happens in a traditional sense, but I never felt bored. It’s more about her emotional arc. There’s also a subplot involving some kind of sabotage at the company, linked to protests over land use — that part was interesting, but more in the background. There’s a twist at the end too that I didn’t totally see coming. All in all, this was a thoughtful, kind of quirky read that caught me off guard in a good way. Would recommend if you like character-driven stories that explore mental health, grief, and healing — with a bit of dry humor thrown in.
