I listened to a German translation of the audiobook that was released in 2018, therefore I cannot attest to which version of the original this was based on, but I still wouldn't let any child around me near this one. The slurs were removed, but it is still racist, I wouldn't want a child to read something that shows whiteness as the only ideal and explicitly labels a Black boy as someone who will 'always be ugly'. Sure, I can see how at one point the general premise may have been considered to be charming and yes, it demonstrates that caring for and respecting animals is important, but I would still categorize it as outdated and cannot recommend it to parents - there is much better children's literature out there!
