Description

A New York Times bestseller, The Silver Linings Playbook was adapted into the Oscar-winning movie starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. It tells the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife's betrayal.

During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.

When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year's Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their "contract." All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.

In this brilliantly written debut novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat's mind, deftly showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. The result is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a bit weird for me at the beginning but once I understood what was going on I really enjoyed it. However, it sometimes was quite difficult for me to understand that a formerly absolutely normal person as Pat would suddenly start living in a world completely of his own without much grab of reality. I know that he just blocked certain memories from his mind. But that he didn't know that he had been in "the bad place" for years seemed quite unrealistic to me. I definitely want to watch the movie now as well. I just read the summary at wikipedia and it seems like the changed quite a bit.

I actually only read the book because I desperatly wanted to see the movie for a long time now but wanted to read the book first. I didn't actually know what the book was about, I had just a brief "ah, I heard it's about this and that". The Silver Linings Playbook reminds me a lot of The Perks of being a Wallflower which isn't necissarily bad, but I couldn't quite get into Perks and same goes for this book. For me, there was way too much football involved and couldn't help myself - I thought Tiffany was really annoying (same goes for almost every single person in the book.). It was a book to cross off my list, but personally I wouldn't recommand it or re-read it. Just not my kind of books, I guess.

I liked it a lot and that's why it got 5 stars. The characters were amazing, the story was good and the style it was written in as well. Also, the character developement was nice to watch :)

No ordinary love story, so complicated and yet so simple, and probably one of the best stories about how to go on. "There will always be a silver lining that reminds me to keep on trying."
