Description

Eric Sanderson wakes up in a place he doesn't recognise, unable to remember who he is. Attacked by a force he cannot see and confronted with memories he cannot ignore, Eric discovers he is being hunted by a psychic predator, a shark. This creature may exist only in his mind, but it soon starts making some very real appearances in his world. Loaded with letters from his past self, each signed 'With regret and also hope, The First Eric Sanderson', Eric embarks on a quest to recover his life. A love story; an adventure; a psychological drama - this wild, touching, modern tale is cut through with an understated humour and warmth. The depths of love, language, memory and the inevitability of loss have never been plumbed with such deep-hearted imagination. It isn't all coming back to me. I don't know any of this at all. I felt that pricking horror, the one that comes when you realise the extent of something bad - if you're dangerously lost or you've made some terrible mistake - the reality of the situation creeping in through the back of your head like some pantomime Dracula. I did not know who I was. I did not know where I was. That simple. That frightening.

Kein neues "House of Leaves"

I have to hand it to the goodreads recommendations engine, this was a really good one! It was recommended to me on the basis that I liked [b:The End of Mr. Y|93436|The End of Mr. Y|Scarlett Thomas|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1287799845s/93436.jpg|1535663], which is one of my absolute favourites. And in terms of weirdness The Raw Shark Texts come up a close second. I was hoping for a bit more of a [excuse me] mindf*ck here but all in all it was great. Anyone interested in the system and connectedness of language and ideas, of concepts and reality, and of coding and decoding should read this. Apart from these rather weird things, it has suspense and love and more weirdness. So, thank you goodreads, for showing me once again why I have been a member here for so long and why I keep coming back (several times a day)!

So you know how The Secret History f-ed me up in like a million different ways? Well this book did too. But I cried a lot at the end. I didn't understand a whole lot of it but I know it was profound in some way and it had a lot of memorable quotes about life and living, and I'll certainly never forget it. Also I'm slightly emotional about having finally finishing it.

Kein Wunder, dass mir das Buch so abgedreht vorkam ... das Ende erklärt einiges. Vielleicht muss ich es irgendwann nochmal lesen, um es verstehen zu können.

I loved it. After finishing it, it couldn't leave my mind. What begins as a story of mental breakdown after a great loss, evolves in a full adventure with monsters, action and even secret societies. It's clever and mind-bending with the right touch of emotion. I really really loved the ending.
