I have no idea how to feel about this book. I didn't really connect to Sloane or James, and I guess I envisioned a different execution of the plot. As someone who has been clinically depressed for a while, I just don't see some of the book actually playing out, but I also recognized that depression is not the same for everyone. I'm just not buying this view of depression--James, Miller, and Brady's definitely but not Sloane's.
I was a bit wary of reading this. Considering what the theme of the book is. It started off a bit morose but as you got in the story got a little fast paced with a few twists and turns. I'm looking for the next book that continues the story. I enjoyed it. I didn't love it, but looking forward to continuing it on.
This is in my top five favorite books list. It's dystopian, which is my favorite genre to read. Appropriate for preteens 12 and up. The book is basically set in a time when suicide has become an international epidemic. The main character, whose name is Sloane, is a teenage girl under constant surveillance at home and school, and any warning signs of being depressed or suicidal could lang her in "The Program," a place that people return from with their minds wiped clean- a blank slate. The only person she feels she can rely on is her boyfriend, James. But they are both losing the war, and depression is settling in. 5 stars.
