Description
Imogen Lovelace is an ordinary fangirl on an impossible mission: to save her favorite Starfield character, Princess Amara, from being killed off. On the other hand, the actress who plays Amara wouldn’t mind being axed. Jessica Stone doesn’t even like being part of the Starfield franchise—and she’s desperate to leave the intense scrutiny of fandom behind.
Though Imogen and Jess have nothing in common, they do look strangely similar to one another—and a case of mistaken identity at ExcelsiCon sets off a chain of events that will change both of their lives. When the script for the Starfield sequel leaks, with all signs pointing to Jess, she and Imogen must trade places to find the person responsible. The deal: Imogen will play Jess at her signings and panels, and Jess will help Imogen’s best friend run their booth.
But as these “princesses” race to find the script leaker—in each other’s shoes—they’re up against more than they bargained for. From the darker side of fandom to unexpected crushes, Imogen and Jess must find a way to rescue themselves from their own expectations...and redefine what it means to live happily ever after.Age range: Teen

Imogen Loveless, fan of the cult-classic show Starfield and its modern movie adaptation, has been told that she looks like actress Jessica before, but she never thought she looked close enough to actually be mistaken for her. But then exactly that happens, somebody mistakes her for Jessica, pushes her onto a panel at a fan con, and Imogen manages this interaction so that no one is the wiser that it wasn't the real Jessica on stage. No one, but the real Jessica, who is not happy about it and never wants it to happen again. All until somebody steals her script for the sequel and starts leaking it, and she really needs the anonymity of Imogen to search for the thief, and proposes for the two of them to switch lives for a few days. Imogen agrees, hoping to leverage Jessica's voice to bring her favorite character back from the dead, and the two of them proceed to try (and occasionally fail) to be each other, and through this learn a lot about each other, the Starfield fandom that links them, and themselves. I cannot handle second-hand embarrassment and this book was full of it due to its nature of two characters switching places and trying to imitate the other one, while other people interact with them as if they were someone else than they are. This was obviously needed for this premise and could not work any other way, but it still sometimes made it hard to go through for me. The rest of it was enjoyable, though, and I liked the journeys they went through, it was very satisfying to watch. While also being full of options for second-hand embarrassment, the focus on two characters trying to be the other one also allowed for a lot of possibilites of parallel and symmetric developments in their arc, which was sooooooooo satisfying. I just loved it so much. Great exploration of fandom, stardom and self-worth.
I was a fan of Jess in Geekerella already and was looking forward to seeing the Starfield world through her ambitious eyes - and the book certainly did not disappoint. Though it had it's lengths at the beginning (I normally listen to audiobooks with 1.2x speed, but skipped up to 1.5x here) I absolutely enjoyed the story and fell in love with Imogen and Jess - they both represent very different sides of my character too, so I could relate. Can't say anything else other than it was a sweet love story, lighthearted and quick to read (or listen lol)
Some heroes don't wear capes. 3.5 stars I read this right after Geekerella. This one had some things that worked better and some things that worked less well than in Geekerella. First of all: It was so nice to meet the characters and the whole fandom again. I got a better sense of what Starfield is all about, I almost found myself excited to watch it. The fandom is brought closer to me. The same with being famous. I found myself wondering if I had ever expressed my opinion online in a way that might hurt someone who's just trying to entertain people. Put some hearts blood into it. I will try (and hopefully succeed) to avoid this in the future. The story was... okay. The characters... weeeeeell. I kinda hated Jess and I didn't really click with Mo either. Neither with the romance. The writing was really amazing though and I'm really looking forward to the next book. Maybe it'll even turn me into a Stargunner after all.
