The end & start of bonus chapters

This is hard to rate because while the ending itself was great and this is still my favorite danmei novel, this was the weakest volume of the series for me. The lead up to the end was interesting, but I was just a bit impatient to finally know what the fate of our main characters is, so I didn't care as much for other things. Also, a certain character wasn't really present for most of it, and I literally felt how I got more excited once he turned up again xD And then there were the bonus chapters... The one literally after the end was great, but the rest was this modern AU, which I absolutely hated. 65 pages of utter bullshit. I know it was supposed to be over the top and silly, but that isn't funny to me. I was bored. I generally don't like AUs because it never feels like it's the same characters. They are who they are because of what they've been through. Their story is why I like them. I feel nothing for these AU ripoffs 🥱 Idk why this has to be an official extra in the book. Feels more like a fanfiction that was added. I really hope the extras in the last volume aren't like that 😭 Anyways, let's go into more details with ⬇️spoilers⬇️: We finally get the full reason Hua Binan/Shi Mei is doing all of this: Get the Butterfly-Boned Beauty Feasts back to demon realm, so they can live there in peace and not get slaughtered and abused by humans. The story of his mother was heartbreaking and I do feel with him and the other BBBFs, but of course that's not a reason for genocide 😅 I loved his character and a complex villain and think his end, sacrificing himself for his people and the irony of not being accepted by the demon realm, fits well. He could have had an accepting home at Shisheng Peak (he knew Chu Wanning saw BBBFs as human and maybe they could have started something to help others and fight for equality), but he couldn't overcome his hatred, which would be understandable if it wasn't for the slaughter of innocents 👀 The fate of the younger Shi Mei was also fitting with him staying blind and becoming a wandering doctor as a kind of repentance for his sins. I just love how this series tackles themes of redemption again and again. That's also why I found the ending with Taxian-jun staying a part of Mo Ran fitting. I can understand why people might not like it, mostly because they don't like Taxian-jun, but he also isn't the same as before. The influence of the flower changed him too much to become like Mo Ran, but now that he is free of it, isn't controlled anymore and shared memories (or something?) with Mo Ran, he isn't "evil" anymore. He saved them from the flood, and he loves Chu Wanning, who loves him back! This is the version of Mo Ran that sacrificed himself so Chu Wanning wouldn't be tainted by the flower. I think he also deserves to be by his side, even if his personality is still... unpredictable, as Xue Meng put it 😂 Speaking of which, I love the focus on him after the end. In the beginning, I'd have never thought that I would grow so fond of Xue Meng. The side characters were generally handled well. Though my favorite might be Ye Wangxi ❤️ I didn't really cry in this volume, but when she showed up again, I had tears in my eyes 🥹 I hope the next volume has many more interesting bonus chapters. I want more from Xue Meng, especially with Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. I was so mad there was no continuation of that reunion chapter with the actual reunion 😭 We know they meet occasionally after a while, but I want to see these interactions! I was also sure Taxian-jun would pop up again, but he didn’t lol. Surely next volume. I just pray there is no more modern AU because that was awful. The story was basically: Jiang Xi has produced a conversion therapy dating Sim simulation to turn Mo Ran straight because he needs him and his rare Butterfly-Boned Beauty Feast DNA to have kids and Xue Meng has to test this... wtf?! Just ask him to donate sperm?? or leave him alone! Trying to exploit BBBFs again, ugh (at least they gave up because he always ended up with Chu Wanning, even in a simulation, duh). And the way this was written... "she breasted boobily," was this co-written by tiktok memes 😭 I know it's a parody and all, but this is just too silly. Gave me second-hand embarrassment. And to top it all off, there were multiple Harry Potter references 🙃 (it's from 2017, but still just annoying to see). I might feel a bit more negative about the volume because of that end, but generally, I still really liked it and am excited for the last one 😌

    A fairly satisfying ending.

Despite my growing issues with the plot, Meatbun still managed to somewhat salvage the story for me. I can't really be mad at Shi Mei, nor can I be truly sad for him. The main story was resolved very quickly, and it's a bittersweet ending. I think my dissatisfaction was mainly due to the fact that the whole parallel universe thing didn't fit into the story for me. I can live with it, but I don't necessarily like it in 2ha, even though this trope is usually right up my alley. At least Ranwan got their happy ending, and Xue Meng will certainly be the reason for me to read the series again sometime. I love him so much and miss him already. I'm looking forward to the extras.
