Not worse than the first, but also not that better.
So the story continues in pretty much the same manner. I even read the book until the end without realiying I had already finished it. The acknowledgement told me I was at the end. Same as with my review for the first book... SPOILERS AHEAD So Ceony brought back Emery and froze Lira in book 1. Of course it makes sense that Lira's friends would go after Ceony and everyone she loved. Emery tries to protect those he loves too, so he sends Ceony away to be safe. But instead of being safe, Ceony lands in the hands of Grath. Grath has figured a way to switch magic, and shows Ceony. So he switches from being a Gaffer to an Excisioner using Delilah. Delilah dies. Ceony also changes from being a Folder to a Gaffer, to save herself and Mg. Aviosky. She kills Grath, but also gets herself so injured. All the while Emery was trying to get Saraj, Lira's other friend. Thats the end.
Even better than the first book, The Paper Magician! Read it in a day. Less gory than the first book but I thought it was much more suspense-packed. Would absolutely recommend to read for anyone who enjoyed The Paper Magician. Also, would definitely recommend to read the series in the right order to prevent spoiling yourself. If possible, try to avoid reading the back of the book. Too many spoilers!
Did not managed to finish this book, nope. Even with audiobook, having it as a background while doing housework it is impossible to go through. It is a pity really: the first book was intriguing but I cannot stand Ceony's mooning over Emery anymore. Abandoned at 58%. The only positive thing is that it was included with kindle unlimited. If you are in for a slow burn romance, go on, this is for you.

Keiner will dem anderen die Gefühle gestehen, insbesondere nicht um die Lehrmeister-Lehrlings-Konstellation zu stören. In einem öffentlichen Lokal nimmt der Exzisor Grath mit ihr Kontakt auf und möchte wissen wie sie seine Gefährtin hat erstarren lassen. Das läuft nicht ganz ohne Drohungen ab. Sein Komplize Saraj hat da weniger Skrupel sie zu verletzen und ein Geständnis möglichst mit Gewalt von Ceony zu erpressen. Als sie dann in eine Falle gelockt wird, enthüllt sich ihr das Geheimnis, wie sie die Bindung an ein Material aufheben kann um sich an ein anderes zu binden. Nun birgt Ceony ein düsteres Geheimnis, das die Welt der Magie auf den Kopf stellen könnte. Ich fand diesen Teil persönlich ein bisschen besser als den Ersten, wenn auch noch nicht richtig gut. Es gab mir noch immer zu viele logische Brüche in der Story. Taxis werden gemischt, mit Autos und Kutschen. Ich denke zu der Zeit, waren Autos eher noch eine Seltenheit und eher den Reichen vorbehalten. Die Situation das Ceony allein mit Emery in einem Haushalt lebt, ohne Personal ist geradezu skandalös, auch wenn ein Aufpasser einer Liebesgeschichte abträglich wäre. Ceony kann ich auch nicht recht einordnen, zum einen verlangt sie überall mitzuentscheiden und eingeweiht zu werden, handelt dann aber überstürzt und kopflos. Auf der anderen Seite mokiert sie sich über zu kurze Röcke, als Ausdruck einer Feministin und findet Langston bräuchte eine Ehefrau, die ihn bekocht. Generell ist Ceony mir ein bisschen zu perfekt, sie kocht, sie hat ein fotografisches Gedächtnis, sie kann alles gleich nach einmal zuschauen, wofür ihre Freundin eine Ausbildung bei einer Glaserin braucht. Wenn das alles so einfach ist, wozu dann das Lehrmeister-Lehrling-Prinzip? Die Schurken kamen ein wenig farblos daher und wirkten eher wie die Handlanger von Emerys Exfrau, als die Anführer, denn es war ja Grath, der diese verführt hat und nicht andersherum. Außerdem wurde mir nicht klar, warum die beiden Ceony so hassten. Insbesondere Saraj, denn der hatte doch gar nichts mit ihr am Hut, außer dass er aus Spaß mordet. Was mich weiterlesen ließ war die wunderbare magische Welt und die Möglichkeiten, die sich einem Falter bzw. einem Glaser bieten, wenn er seine Fähigkeiten trainiert. Von daher und weil es ein kurzes Lesevergnügen ist, werde ich noch den dritten Teil lesen, um zu sehen, wie die ganze Geschichte um Ceony und Emery sich entwickelt.
