The Girl and the Stars (The Book of the Ice, Band 1)

Yaz lives on Abeth, a planet covered by ice, safe for a strip of land around the equator of the planet, kept alive by an artificial moon. Her adventure begins as she jumps into the Pit of the Missing where her brother is pushed in by the priests that control the Ice tribes. And down in the tunnels under the ice, she not only finds truths about her world, but also about herself… I read the Book of the Ancestor trilogy years ago and it is one of the book series I still think about. One can imagine how amazing it felt for me to return to this world. I was always fascinated by the world building, a world covered in Ice with many secrets and lost civilisations below it. As we follow Yaz on her journey, we learn a lot about the history of the world, which I don‘t want to spoil. One thing I love about this world is the variety of magic powers, some of which feel a bit overpowered but honestly that‘s the vibe of the story. Yaz and her friends are young people who grew up under the harsh conditions of Abeth and now have to figure out their place in the world. The character development is amazing, as the characters are pretty young in the beginning of the sotry. On their journey they find friendship, love and found family. It wouldn‘t be a Mark Lawrence book without severaly gorey scenes and heartbreaking losses, so keep in mind there are some pretty graphic scenes. Book 3 in particular referenced the other trilogy which instantly makes me want to jump back into the story from the very beginning and made the entire experience perfect for me. I can not recommend this series enough and I really wish there were more books in this world. 4⭐️ for the entire trilogy

Ehrlich gesagt weiß ich gerade gar nicht, wie ich dieses Buch bewerten soll. Von dem Autor hatte ich noch kein Buch gelesen. Allerdings wurden seine Bücher bisher recht gut bewertet, sodass ich mir die signierte Illumicrate Ausgabe gönnte. Die Geschichte hörte sich spannend und gut an. Zuerst hat es mir auch recht gut gefallen. Den Schreibstil fand ich gut und auch die Einführung in die Welt und Vorstellung der Charaktere ließ eigentlich keine Wünsche übrig. Das harte Leben in der Eiswelt konnte ich mir recht gut vorstellen. Alles passte gut zum Klappentext und man weiß von da schon, dass Yaz, die Protagonistin, anders ist. Sie kommt deswegen zu den Ausgestoßenen und entdeckt eine unerwartete Welt und ebenso unerwartete Fähigkeiten. Bis dahin alles gut, interessant und spannend. Wo ich allerdings anfing, eine Verbindung zur Geschichte zu verlieren, war, als es in die unterirdische Stadt ging. Irgendwie konnte ich mir vieles nicht mehr vorstellen, Handlungen wurden nicht ganz nachvollziehbar und mit der Zeit wurden Yazs ständigen Selbstzweifel und Unsicherheiten nervig. Ständig bekam man zu lesen, dass sie doch mit ihrem Makel unwürdig ist und deswegen nur noch an sich zweifelt und sie doch im Grunde es nicht wert ist, zu überleben. Die besonderen Fähigkeiten bzw. Magie(?) der Ausgestoßenen ist interessant. Allerdings wurde es auch da um Yaz herum mit der Zeit anstrengend. Sie bedient sich der Magie, was für sie stellenweise recht schmerzhaft ist, sie ist irgendwann am Ende ihrer Kräfte... und dann schafft sie es doch noch mit einem letzten Rest ihrer Kräfte mit der Magie Unglaubliches zu vollbringen. Und das immer wieder. Irgendwann leidet da die Glaubwürdigkeit. Letztendlich wollte ich das Buch einfach so schnell wie möglich hinter mich bringen. Ich wollte es nicht unvollendet zur Seite legen. Es kam natürlich zum großen Showdown und schließlich, da es sich wieder mal um eine Reihe handelt, zu einem absoluten Cliffhanger. Ich muss gestehen, dass mich dieser Cliffhanger durchaus neugierig macht, wie es weiter geht und was weiter passiert. Das ist dem Autor richtig gut gelungen. Aber die Langatmigkeit und Verwirrung, die immer wieder vorkam, war teilweise wirklich mühsam. Deswegen bin ich mir momentan nicht sicher, ob oder wann ich weiter lesen werde. Vielleicht macht es Sinn, dem Buch irgenwann nochmal eine zweite Chance zu geben. Gerade aufgrund des Cliffhangers fasst man manches Gelesene anders auf und es könnte einiges klarer sein. Aber im Moment brauche ich erst mal andere Bücher.
