A beautifully presented and thoroughly enjoyable collection of crime stories from Scotland 🇬🇧/🏴 (🇩🇪 unten).
‘The Edinburgh Mystery and Other Tales of Scottish Crime‘ by Martin Edwards proved a thoroughly enjoyable read and a most fitting conclusion to our week in Edinburgh. I particularly cherished the atmosphere of the stories, which felt like a gentle prolongation of our holiday, allowing us to linger a little longer in the city’s distinctive mood and character. The collection is admirably varied. While several of the tales left me keen for more, a small number struck me as somewhat uneven, with prose and narration that did not quite meet the standard set by the stronger contributions. I was especially delighted to encounter, for the first time in print, characters I had previously known only by name or from television adaptations (e.g. Father Brown). In that respect, the anthology serves as an excellent introduction to a number of authors whose wider works I shall certainly seek out. All in all, it is a most agreeable volume, handsomely presented in an aesthetically pleasing paperback edition. ————————— „The Edinburgh Mystery and Other Tales of Scottish Crime“ von Martin Edwards erwies sich als eine überaus angenehme Lektüre und als passender Abschluss unseres einwöchigen Aufenthalts in Edinburgh. Besonders mochte ich die Atmosphäre der Geschichten, welche wie eine Verlängerung unseres Urlaubs wirkten und es mir erlaubten, ein wenig länger in der besonderen Stimmung der Stadt zu verweilen. Die Sammlung ist durchaus vielseitig. Während einige der Erzählungen den Wunsch nach mehr weckten, waren einzelne eher enttäuschend – sprachlich und erzählerisch konnten sie nicht mit den stärkeren Beiträgen mithalten. Es bereitete mir zudem besondere Freude, erstmals Figuren in gedruckter Form zu begegnen, die ich bislang nur dem Namen nach oder aus Fernsehadaptionen kannte (z.B. Pater Brown). In dieser Hinsicht bietet die Anthologie einen ausgezeichneten Einstieg in das Werk mehrerer Autorinnen und Autoren. Alles in allem handelt es sich um eine reizende Sammlung, zudem in einer ästhetisch sehr gelungenen Paperback-Ausgabe.
