Description
In early twenty-first-century Thailand, Scott is an expatriate slacker. Then, one day, he inadvertently witnesses an impossible event: the violent appearance of a 200-foot stone pillar in the forested interior. Its arrival collapses trees for a quarter mile around its base, freezing ice out of the air and emitting a burst of ionizing radiation. It appears to be composed of an exotic form of matter. And the inscription chiseled into it commemorates a military victory--sixteen years in the future.
Shortly afterwards, another, larger pillar arrives in the center of Bangkok-obliterating the city and killing thousands. Over the next several years, human society is transformed by these mysterious arrivals from, seemingly, our own near future. Who is the warlord "Kuin" whose victories they note?
Scott wants only to rebuild his life. But some strange loop of causality keeps drawing him in, to the central mystery and a final battle with the future. The Chronoliths is a 2002 Hugo Award Nominee for Best Novel and the winner of the 2002 John W. Campbell Memorial Award.

An diesem Buch bin ich fast gescheitert. Vielleicht hatte ich einfach zu viel erwartet. Der Klappentext erzählte eine spannende Geschichte - und die fehlte mir im Buch. Anfangs. Worum geht es im Roman? Eines Tages tauchen überall auf der Welt große Monolithen auf, aus dem Nichts. Die Wucht ihrer "Ankunft" zerstört ganze Städte und verunsichert die Menschen. Die Objekte stammen aus der Zukunft und verheißen nichts Gutes für die kommenden Jahre. Scott, ein junger Familienvater, ist dabei, als der erste Monolith erscheint. Er berichtet dem Leser, wie sich die Welt durch das Wissen um die unerfreuliche Zukunft verändert. Als ich das Buch so um 2006 herum las, wusste ich noch nicht, dass die etwas eigenartige Erzählweise der Stil des Autors ist. Entsprechend enttäuscht war ich zu Beginn der Geschichte. Die Hauptfigur ist bereits etwas älter und erzählt gemächlich von den unheimlichen Geschehnissen rund um die Monolithen. Dieser Kontrast - einerseits die Gemächlichkeit der Berichterstattung und andererseits die gefährliche Suche nach Lösungen - machte das Buch im weiteren Verlauf des Romans dann doch spannend. Ich kann das Buch jedem Science-Fiction-Leser empfehlen, der es gerne ruhig angehen lässt.
