The Book of Fallen Leaves is undeniably epic. Samurai clans, vengeful gods, political betrayals, and enough demonic onryō to haunt your dreams. The worldbuilding is rich, immersive, and dripping with Japanese folklore. If you want a fantasy that feels like stepping into a living legend, this book delivers. But it never quite grabbed me emotionally. I wanted to love it. The premise is bold, the setting is lush, the stakes are high. Sen’s journey from exiled traitor to a man torn between vengeance and redemption should have been heart-wrenching. Rui’s quiet strength and their slow-burning tension - really good. The political intrigue, the civil war brewing like a storm, the gods and demons lurking in the shadows? All the right ingredients in theory. And yet… I found myself flipping pages out of obligation, not obsession. The first half dragged, the second half picked up, but never earned the emotional payoff it aimed for. The characters are well-drawn, but didn't let me immerse myself fully. This is a book that demands respect for its ambition and worldbuilding. It’s the kind of story that will linger as a beautiful artifact, but not one I will be thinking about with feelings. 3.5/5 stars.
