Description

It was like a nightmare, but there was no waking up.

When the night began, Nora had two best friends and a boyfriend she adored. When it ended, she had nothing but blood on her hands. Chris was dead. Adriane couldn’t speak. And Max, Nora’s sweet, smart, soft-spoken Prince Charming, was gone. He was also—according to the police, according to her parents, according to everyone—a murderer.

Desperate to prove his innocence, Nora’s determined to follow the trail of blood, no matter where it leads. But Chris’s murder is just one piece in a puzzle that spans continents and centuries. Solving it may be the only way she can save her own life.

When I first read the description of The Book of Blood and Shadow I was very intrigued and knew I had to read it. Although the description gives you an idea I wasn't quite sure what would expect me and oh my, it was so much more than I expected! I think the official description gives you enough an idea without giving too much away so I'll refrain from summarizing it again for you. The Book of Blood and Shadow is an immensely thrilling, suspenseful and surprising read with many unexpected twits and turns which will take you off guard. It starts out a bit slow and definitely takes a while to really get going but once it does you'll be spellbound and won't be able to take your eyes off the pages! The writing was fantastic, no purple prose (thankfully!). If something was described in more detail it always had its purpose. Robin Wasserman has done a wonderful job with mapping out the storyline and leading the reader into the world she's created. She has done her research and it shows. It made her world so much more vivid and real. I've read another book set in Prague recently but I enjoyed Wasserman's so much more. I thought Nora was a wonderful female character and lead, one who has her weaknesses and is able to acknowledge them. She's strong, independent and extremely closed off emotionally which was very easy for me to relate to. Nora didn't have an easy life, with her parents emotionally detached to get on with life and she hasn't quite dealt with everything that life has handed to her but she will at some point. All the primary and secondary characters were well done, none of them coming off as one-dimensional, none reduced to clichés or tropes. I especially liked Chris and Eli while I had my problems with Max and Adriane. You'll be able to discover to yourself why once you read the book. I don't want to give too much away but the last fifth of the book, wow. I saw some others were disappointed with the ending but I loved it and I think it leaves things open enough for the reader to imagine how it would continue. I am eagerly awaiting next year's release so I can buy my own physical copy and look at the letter included in the book the way it was intended to. Please note that the length of time it took to me to read the book is NOT indicative of how much I enjoyed it.
