A once-in-a-generation series, Ali Smith's Seasonal quartet is a tour-de-force about love, time, art, politics, and how we live now.

'A maestra's portrait of her age . . . remarkable' Guardian

In the present, Sacha knows the world's in trouble. Her brother Robert just is trouble. Their mother and father are having trouble. Meanwhile the world's in meltdown - and the real meltdown hasn't even started yet. In the past, a lovely summer. A different brother and sister know they're living on borrowed time.

This is a story about people on the brink of change. They're family, but they think they're strangers. So: where does family begin? And what do people who think they've got nothing in common have in common?

Summer.

I'm sad the seasonal quartett is over

What a perfect ending. Picking up most of the stories and people from the other three books. I would just love to keep on reading about those characters that have grown on me dearly. Again a lot of politics and arts... this time mainly the pandemic and how it changed who we see as family and want to stay close to in times get rough... Next time I would like to read the books in german. They are a lovely read in English, don't get me wrong. But I think I could get even deeper into the story and be more able to read between the lines in german. And I would read them one after the other and not wait for the right season to come... this was an amazing experience but it would be nicer not to have to look up who was who in one of the other seasons...

Großartig! Irgendwann werde ich alle 4 Romane direkt hintereinander noch einmal lesen. Was für ein stimmiges Finale.

ali smith is a genius and i will not accept other opinions about this. summer especially was a book about bringing people together in a time that is trying to split us apart. in the same way as autumn, winter, spring and summer only make sense as a tetralogy, a connected story rather than separate entities, summer’s story unites everything.
