As V.E. Schwab says, "the comics are going to bridge the space between Shades of Magic and Threads of Power." Delve into the thrilling, epic tale of the young and arrogant prince Maxim Maresh, long before he became the king of Red London and adoptive father to Kell, the lead of A Darker Shade of Magic!
The youthful Maresh is sent to a violent and unmanageable port city on the Blood Coast of Verose, on strict orders from his father, King Nokil Maresh, to cut his military teeth in this lawless landscape.
There, he encounters an unruly band of soldiers, a lawless landscape, and the intoxicatingly deadly presence of the newly returned pirate queen, Arisa...

The artwork is beautiful and I've grown very fond of the characters and the world anyway. The story (which we have already experienced) is ... shallow and unfortunately goes a bit too fast for me. It feels like you pressed the fast-forward button and that's a bit sad because I think it would have had a lot more potential if they had taken their time for more volumes and elaborated everything a bit more.
I love Victoria Schwab and I was very curious about her first comic! Personally, I didn't really care about King Maxim's backstory but in the end that didn't matter because I will read anything by this author. I was very happy to go back to the world of Shades of Magic in the comic! The art style felt a little rough sometimes, but it fits the setting very well and just looks really cool. In the books I never had a problem envisioning everything since Schwab's writing style is so vivid. However, actually seeing all this magic in the comic was phenomenal and so much better! I loved it! Especially the fight scenes were, in my opinion, very awesome. I did enjoy the glimpse in Maxim's past, even though I never really liked the character in the books. It made want to re-read the entire trilogy, too. Now I am waiting for the next comic, Night of Knives - it sounds very promising and I can't wait to read more!
I think it was interesting to see the story and the magic visualized, and I love that V.E. Schwab went on to explore Maxim further, which made it a bit easier for me to understand his behaviour in the original series. However, the story was not that intriguing and I think the first part is definitely enough for me, and I will not read the other graphic novels.
Yoooo this was AWESOME!!! I feared from the cover artwork, that this would be some royal pagelong dialogues boring story novel, but it def wasnt!!! I really liked the artstyle, it fitted well to the Action in this book! I picked this one up, because I liked schwab's shades of Magic novels. Glad I did so!
