Eris and Clo are two resistance fighters for a rebel group, caught up in a battle to put a stop to the pitiless Tholosian Empire conquering planet after planet, ruling people via a mind-control programme called the Oracle. The rebels don't have the same resources as the Empire, but what they do have is Eris - or, Princess Discordia as she was once known, heir to the Empire, until she faked her own death and decided to dedicate her life to destroying her family. Clo despises Eris for who she was, but they are forced to team up when they find a ship containing three women - each of whom claims to have escaped from the Empire, with secret knowledge of how to bring it down. But can they trust them?

Ein grausames Imperium, eine totgeglaubte Prinzessin und eine unmögliche Mission sind die Zutaten von "Seven Devils" von Elizabeth May und Laura Lam. Dazu gibt es noch viel Feminismus und diverse Repräsentation. Eine ungewöhnliche Truppe findet sich in diesem ersten Teil zusammen und möchte das tholosianische Regime stürzen. Viel Gewalt und Action machen diese Reihe zu einer, die nicht für jeden geeignet ist. Ich mochte die Geschichte gerne und bin auf Teil 2 gespannt. Wer Dystopien mag, dürfte sich hier recht wohlfühlen. Das Buch hat sich für meinen Geschmack etwas zu sehr in den Extremen aufgehalten und was ich ein bisschen problematisch finde ist, dass es unter den 7 Rebell*innen auch Massenmörder*innen gibt. Allerdings haben alle ihre ganz eigene Geschichte mit dem tholosianischen Imperium und so werden auch wichtige moralische Fragen aufgeworfen.
The description of this book was enough to convince me to read it and it was absolutely worth it! The story is about Clo and Eris, who are both part of the resistance. They fight against the Tholosian Empire which spans galaxies and controls its citizen via programming in their brains. Only few can escape its influence. Even though the protagonists are still dealing with a falling out with each other, they are both assigned to a new mission. They have to investigate a mysterious cargo on an Empire ship. Of course, nothing goes as planned and in the end they are facing a possible war with only seven of them to stop it. All the characters are likable and they always got into so many complicated situations. This means that I was always in suspense, never sure how it would all end. Even though the number of the characters keeps rising, I was never confused. Everyone has a distinctive personality and their various relationships are really interesting to read about. Sometimes (especially towards the end) I was annoyed by the flashback chapters because I would rather progress with the main action, but those were never too long. Another negative point is that the ending is quite open. I just really want to keep reading! I do recommend this space adventure - it's gripping and full of badass women, all with different kinds of strenghts, all fighting against oppression. What else could I wish for?
