Description

International bestselling author Mark Lawrence continues the bold new world of dark fantasy he created in the Broken Empire trilogy with the first book of the Red Queen's War... For all her reign the Red Queen has fought the long war, contested in secret, against the powers that stand behind nations, for higher stakes than land or gold. Her greatest weapon is The Silent Sister—unseen by most and unspoken of by all. The Red Queen’s grandson, Prince Jalan Kendeth—drinker, gambler, seducer of women—is one who can see The Silent Sister. Content with his role as a minor royal, Jal pretends that the hideous crone is not there. But war with the undead is coming, and the Red Queen has called on her family to defend the realm. Jal thinks that nothing that will affect him. He's wrong... After escaping a death trap set by the Silent Sister, Jal finds his fate magically intertwined with a fierce Norse warrior. As the two undertake a journey to undo the spell, encountering grave dangers, willing women, and an upstart prince named Jorg Ancrath along the way, Jalan gradually catches a glimmer of the truth: he and the Norseman are but pieces in a game—and the Red Queen controls the board.

4.5* After the amazing conclusion of one of my all time favorite series, The Broken Empire Trilogy, Mark Lawrence now published the first book of his new series The Red Queen's War and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. Set in the same world as TBE it plays out parallel to Prince of Thorns and readers of the first series get a few eastereggs and crossovers, but it's in no way necessary to read the previous books to understand these. That is actually a very clever move by Mark Lawrence, Jorg wasn't every ones cup of tea, you either hate him or love him. In my goodreads friend list the opinions really go only these two directions and thus many people didn't read the other two books. But here we get a restart with a totally different character and people get the chance to try again. Jal hasn't that much of a conflict potential as Jorg did, so maybe more people will enjoy it. I like that Jal once again is a unusual character. A "hero" that is a total coward and only serves his own best interest. Very entertaining to read the story through his eyes as it's first person narrative again. Together with his nordic sidekick Snorri Ver Snagason, he travels through the post apocalyptic Europe entertain with lot's of dark humor, a fast paced story and great characters. Even if you didn't like Prince of Thornes I highly recommend you give Prince of Fools a try!
