Description

An immortal love,
a tyrannical god thirsting for power,
and the divine tree that binds them all.

California 1955: After spending eight centuries witnessing the world’s cruelty, Anna has finally found peace in the simple life she’s made for herself. She has her garden and hives to nurture and Khiran, the shapeshifting god who gifted her immortality, to love and to hold. It is, she knows, too good to last.
When her existence is discovered, Anna and Khiran are forced to go into hiding or face the wrath of the reigning god they call The First. Staying together means sacrifices must be made…but they aren’t the only immortals who wish to see The First fall, or the only ones with everything to lose.
One thing is for certain: fear is for them all.

„He will gladly live in shackles, it if means she remains free to fly.”

The story in the second book has a different focus - we learn much more about the gods and magic here (but of course there are still a lot of historical moments included). I devoured the book just like the first one. At times I was unsure whether I wouldn't have liked it better as a trilogy. Some things could have been worked out more, you were waiting the whole time for the big bang, which only came in the last few chapters and was over relatively quickly. But in the end I was very happy with how the story ended. I can highly recommend it.

Pure sweetness ✨

Now that I finally made it out of my biggest reading slump, I was able to finish this absolutely amazing duology. 🥹 The second book is so different from the first—and yet not at all. The focus shifts much more to the relationships, the gods and their history and personal stories . At the same time, you travel across even more continents and feel everything so much more intensely. I absolutely LOVE the relationship between Anna and Khiran—how they support each other and how much they need one another. And the ending? Perfect. A little shock at first, then you think you’ve come to terms with it—and then - boom - magic in the last few sentences. ✨ Raeta is such a talented author. Her writing style is captivating, full of emotions, and simply beautiful. 10/10 for this duology. ❤️

Lovely

Though this book had me SCARED SHITLESS for a second there, I am very very very happy with the conclusion of this story.

This was such a beautifully written conclusion! Once again, I loved the time jumps, the history snippets from the 1950s to the 1970s and the perspectives on different places and cultures is seamless. The romance was soft and still so fierce. I’ve been pondering and sitting in that tension of how tragedy and beauty, while the ending was beautifully written and broke my heart for Khiran. The pacing of the book is deliberate, drawing readers in with its warm and poetic romance. It's the perfect blend of fantasy, romance, and aktual history that keeps you engaged from start to finish. Both of the books in this duology are in the low three hundreds for page count but personally, I found myself lost in the world of Anna and Khiran and it's a story that will stick with me for a long time. It was so immersive and magical✨️
