Persuasion

While I really enjoyed it, I wish it was more about regrets and what-ifs than it actually was. Wondering how things could be different if one made other decisions is highly interesting to me, so seeing Anne's regrets towards Wentworth being kind of vague and amounting to little more than a little embarrassment when seeing him again and being sad that he says she has changed was a little disappointing. However, judging the book for what it is rather than for what it isn't: i really liked it. It is less about strong main characters than P&P or Emma and therefore seemed less witty, but still offered everything I expect from Jane Austen. Anne, while the protagonist with interesting enough characteristics, is more watching and reacting than actually being active, through her eyes we see what is happening in her social circle of very interesting characters that carry the story. While one could argue that the love story wasn't pronounced enough to be really satisfying, I didn't actually mind since I am more into the social delicacies of the time than into romance. I love Jane Austen's books for lending themselves well to discussions. It is fun to examine the characters, their opinions and how some aspects of a classic like this are still very relevant today.

Persuasion is a nice and quiet book. The main character loved a man but her friend persuaded her not to marry him. But she always regretted her decision because she never stopped loving him. I like how she handles it, she doesn't overthink or pitty herself. She just goes on and tries to make things right. Even though some major things happen, there is no drama, that's what I love about Jane Austen, she always is above such things, with a tick of irony and humour.
