Ich habe so viel gelernt!
Halliday schafft es die verschiedenen Erdzeitepochen bildhaft und detailliert darzustellen, ohne dabei in Fachsimpelei abzudriften. Eine spannende Erzählweise, die mich am Lesen gehalten hat. Immer wieder haben mich die Beschreibungen dazu angehalten die Organismen zu googeln, die beschrieben wurden und jedes Mal dachte ich: Was ist das für eine Welt? Ich habe so viele Dinge zum ersten Mal gehört, die mir nicht bewusst waren. Das Mittelmeer war mal leer? Riesige Otter und Pinguine streiften über die Erde? Es gibt neben Sonnenlicht auch Erdlicht? Einziges Manko ist für mich an einigen Stellen die Übersetzung. Es wirkt teilweise so als sei der englische Sprachgebrauch sehr direkt übersetzt worden, sodass er auf Deutsch jedoch nicht mehr so viel Sinn ergibt. Dies fällt aber nur an wenigen Stellen auf. Ansonsten top!
Interessante Einblicke in die Weltgeschichte
Hallidays Buch "Urwelten" beschreibt eine fiktive Reise in die Vergangenheit, bis 550 Millionen Jahren vor heute, und geht dabei auf markante Änderungen im Leben auf der Erde ein. Dabei beginnt der Autor im Pleistozön (20 000 Jahre) und arbeitet sich Stück für Stück zum Ediacarum (550 Mio. Jahre) vor, um abschließend im Epilog auf die Zukunft einzugehen. Ich persönlich hätte die Anordnung als chronologischen Zeitstrahl Richtung Gegenwart besser für das Verständnis gefunden. Zudem war das Buch für mich ab Kapitel 14 mit dem Zeitalter des Silur eher uninteressant. Dennoch war vor allem die "Dinosaurier-Zeit" und die an unserer Zeit vergleichsweise nahen Erdzeitalter spannend zu lesen. Zudem konnte ich viele neue Fakten und Informationen lernen :)
It was a very interesting read, very cool to see the long way life has come and how much the earth has changed in her life. The ecosystems are all described in a very detailed way, so you can really see them before your inner eye while reading. I just wish there had been illustrations of the animals and plants, because I often had difficulty imagining those from just a few words (often they weren't described at all). The author also often jumped between present day and the age he was describing during his writing, with no clear indication of a jump happening. That often left me wondering if he's talking about 2023 or 223 million years ago lol
