Description

Welcome to Andover, where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship--only it turns out to be for the towns most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, whom Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then theres the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious “M,” who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.

I really wanted to give this 5*. I hoped this book would live up to my expectations. First of all, it's about superheroes. I fucking love superheroes! And second of all, the Main Character is Vietnamese (hello? Same!) and bi (again!). I identified heavily with Jess and I loved how her background was written into the story. Little things like her going to a banh mi shop, about her going to Saturday School to learn (i think it was ) Mandarin, them naming the little Monrobot Cha... It all felt so close to home! Now onto other things... Nothing happened in 80% of the book. The reveal that her crush was also M was ... well not surprising at all considering it's written on the synopsis. Like ? They just revealed the whole story already. It was boring. And all the action and stuff happened at the end of the book. The villain seemed... really flat too. Maybe it's writte for a younger audience, but I didn't like the whole thing with the villain. And the ending just felt way too easy! They just let them off hook? Just that easily? And again, while i loved the cute little romance that happened over the book, there was no real plot otherwise and then everything happened at the end. I'm disappointed I wished I would've liked it more but alas I didn't! I'll probably give the sequel a try and don't put my expectations too high... Also what bothered me... It's the fucking future and people still were looking at her weirdly because she's bi? Alright I would've thought by then it was more normal but yeah.

3.5 this book was super fun and engaging! i adore the main character and her romance with abby, this shit is so soft I CAAAAAN'T i can say that it got super cheesy and predictable at times, but at this point i don't care, because the characters are my babies and i'm in love with all of them 💞

pacing is a little messy but the bi romance plot is very sweet and soft and wholesome and was my favourite thing about this one, I initially started this series because I was interested in the third book but I'm now also invested enough to keep reading for the characters.

I love the premise, but there were more details than story at times. It kinda threw me off. I loooove Abby and Bells though. This will probably need a reread because this is the second book in a row that I’ve found boring. I’m hoping I’m not in a slump.

Very exciting, original story with great representation. Some of the plot twists/revelations were a tad too obvious for me, but apart from that, it's an awesome book.
