Urban-Sci-Fi-Fantasy at it’s best! The book „Nice Dragons Finish Last“ by Rachel Aaron is the first installment of the „Heartstriker“ series. It follows our protagonist Julius Heartstriker on his way to navigate the brutal politics and traditions of his dragon clan. Very untypical of a dragon he is an introvert and has been avoiding any conflict his entire life. Banished and sealed he sets out in the magical city of the DFZ to reclaim some status in his dragon clan. On his way he’s accompanied by a female mage and her mysterious ghost cat. I read this book after I read the DFZ series by Rachel Aaron which is set at a later date. I was I trilogies by the mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements with an urban fantasy setting. Normally I don’t gravitate towards urban fantasy but Rachel Aaron completely changed my mind with her series. The world building and characters are excellent and feel really unique. I loved the idea of dragons with a human form that are living among humans and their social structures. You can clearly see how much effortless creativity was put into the world. I’ve finished the series now and I wholeheartedly recommend it!
