Having read Courting Darkness and Igniting Darkness before the original His Fair Assassin series, I knew a few things about Annith, the protagonist, and Balthazar, her love interest, that Annith did not know at the time of the story, which lessened my enjoyment of this book. I was feeling a lot of second-hand embarrassment at Annith learning about these things before it actually happened, which is a problem that people who read the series in the right order would not have had. Even still, after reading four of Robin LaFevers books I should've known that the reveals would warrant no second-hand embarrassment, as she again proves how you can craft stories and situations, as well as misunderstandings, that could very easily lead to second-hand embarrassment, but don't and are better for it. Still, the first third of this book bored me a little. The interesting part about the other four books is our assassins being at court, with its courtly intrigues and political affairs. While Annith's time at the convent and her time with the hellequin was important to her story, these parts did not catch me as much as the previous and following books did. When she finally did arrive at court, the rest of the book is just as good and interesting as the rest of the series. I very much enjoyed following Annith finding out things about herself, her convent and her lover.
