Düstere Zukunftsvision, aber der Erzählstil liegt mir gar nicht Abgebrochen

Since I really enjoyed reading „tender is the flesh“ I was looking for similar type of books with maybe a difference nuance to the trope. On Reddit lots of people suggested „meat“, and I really liked the idea of combining the cannibalism trope with religious fanatics in an apocalyptic world. I was excited to start reading. What can I say: I did not like it at all It all felt very „male gaze“ to me, lots of descriptions of male genitalia, topics like Rape & child abuse for „fun“ and power display; the depiction of female characters is horrible, but the male characters aren’t any better. They are all very cliché and bland characters, the most villainous villain of all times, but with zero interesting traits. I did not like or empathise with a single one of them. The religious cult theme did fit the story, but it lacked basically all world building or further explanation of anything happening. It’s just some random dystopian ideas put together to be particularly „horrific“ to the reader. Spoiler: <spoiler>On top the „vegetarian“(?) movement, powerful rebels fueled by love and light (of course). The protagonist with the „mysterious“ backstory (that I did not care for at all and that felt really pulled from thin air) that would do everything for his daughters, except for actually being a father and being home for once. Sorry girls, Busy going running and saving the world. Ugh. It was just to much cliches for me. </spoiler>I struggled through the book, forcing myself to finish it, but detesting every new page. It all felt very slow and unnecessary. Towards the end there are way to many characters and the constant switching between their perspectives made it even more tedious. Over all: would not recommend. If you like the „people as meat“ trope, read „tender is the flesh“.

Einstieg - Mittelteil - Perfekt! Gegen Ende verliert es leider etwas den Pepp. Trotzdem ein lesenswertes Buch, mit mehr Gesellschaftskritik, als man erwarten mag!
