Amaryllis Fox was in her last year as an undergraduate at Oxford studying theology and international law when her writing mentor Daniel Pearl was captured and beheaded. Ein wahnsinnig interessanter und durchweg spannender Einblick in eine sonst verborgene Welt. Fox nimmt den Leser mit in ihr Leben: zurück bis in ihre Kindheit, in der sie viele Verluste erleiden musste und ihr Gerechtigkeitssinn geschärft wurde. In ihre Jungend, in welcher ihr Mut und Engagement für die Freiheit und Demokratie in Burma bereits außergewöhnlich waren. In ihre Ausbildungszeit auf der „Farm“ der CIA und schließlich zu ihren Missionen nach Asien und in den Nahen Osten. Der Anfang bis hin zu Fox‘ Einstieg bei der CIA mag zu Beginn vielleicht etwas lang wirken, doch auch dieser ist sehr kurzweilig und unabkömmlich, um die Beweggründe von Fox im Verlauf des Buches zu verstehen. Gemeinsam mit ihr reist man zu Missionen, die sie immer mit dem Ziel des Friedenstiftens angeht, die aber auch immer geprägt sind vom Hinterfragen. Fox schafft es das steinharte, starke und mechanische Bild, welches man sich von CIA Agenten ausmalt, in das eines manchmal zweifelnden und mit dem Leben, Moral und Sinnfragen hadernden ganz normalen Menschen zu verwandeln. Doch nicht nur der Einblick in diese ganz andere Welt und ihre Bedeutung für die Agenten („Operativen“), sondern auch die kleinen Lehren, die Fox in ihrem außergewöhnlichen Leben lernte, unterhielten und lehrten mich die gesamten 265 Seiten über wirklich sehr. Einziger kleiner Kritikpunkt ist das doch recht schnelle und kurzabgehandelte Ende, welches ich mir noch ausgeschmückter gewünscht hätte.
