Rarely a book touches me so deeply. I was born in Genova, La Superba, but I escaped the experiences inside the old town. There, I always felt like a visitor to take in the culture and the ambience but not having or wanting to be part of it. Pfeijffer is true to himself, he recants the places, the people, his own behaviour as openly and as soberly as possible. I don't have to like him and how he behaves but I'm grateful for his total honesty and crudeness. The structure of the book is astounding, the prose is flowing and intriguing. It's a journey through spaces and time, through people and immigration and politics and corruption and the deep knowledge of the place, which eludes me still.
