Ellroy fängt die düstere, korrupte Atmosphäre der USA der 1950er-Jahre eindringlich ein: Hollywood-Glamour trifft auf Polizeigewalt, Machtmissbrauch und moralische Grauzonen. Besonders überzeugend sind die komplexen, widersprüchlichen Charaktere, die sich zwischen Ehrgeiz, Loyalität und Schuld bewegen und dem Roman große psychologische Tiefe verleihen. Vorsicht ist allerdings bei der teilweise sehr derben und harten Sprache geboten. Diese kann verstörend wirken, ist jedoch bewusst eingesetzt und trägt wesentlich zur Authentizität der Epoche und des Milieus bei.
