Kirchengeschichte I: Von der Alten Kirche bis zum Hochmittelalter

Der Band bringt in elf Kapiteln das Grundwissen im Fach Kirchengeschichte bis zum Hochmittelalter in einem Umfang näher, wie es Inhalt eines Studiums der Evangelischen Theologie sein sollte. Dabei wird ein großer Bogen vom 2. bis zum 13. Jahrhundert, also von den Anfängen der nachapostolischen Zeit bis zu den einflussreichen Lehrsystemen der Scholastik, gespannt. Auch wenn das schon lange her ist, so bleibt dies für das europäische Christentum nach wie vor – und zum Teil auch in überraschender Weise – dennoch prägend. Dabei steht in diesem Lehrbuch nicht die Vermittlung einer Überfülle an Namen, Daten und Fakten im Vordergrund. Es kommt hier vielmehr darauf an, Zusammenhänge zu verstehen, und zu entdecken, dass auch die Beschäftigung mit der Kirchengeschichte einen Beitrag zur konstruktiven Auseinandersetzung mit der Vielfalt des Christlichen in einer globalisierten Welt leisten kann.

[Church History I: From the Early Church to the High Middle Ages]
In eleven chapters, the volume familiarizes us with basic knowledge in the subject of church history up to the High Middle Ages, in a breadth appropriate to the content of a study of Protestant theology. A large arc is traced from the 2nd to the 13th century, that is, from the beginnings of the post-apostolic period to the influential doctrinal systems of Scholasticism. While this is long ago, it still remains influential for European Christianity – and to some extent in surprising ways. In this textbook, the focus is not on conveying an abundance of names, dates, and facts. Rather, what is important here is understanding connections and discovering that an engagement in church history can also contribute to a constructive treatment of the diversity of Christianity in a globalized world.
