Nicht mein erstes Buch von Helen Scheurer und die lese ich tatsächlich ganz gerne zwischendurch, denn sie funktionieren, ohne dabei hohe Erwartungen erfüllen zu wollen. Wir haben es hier mit zwei Charakteren zu tun, die Nebencharaktere in einer ihrer anderen Reihen (Legends of Thezzmar) und darin sich bereits mehrmals über den Weg gelaufen sind und tatsächlich einiges zusammen erlebt haben, sich aber dennoch nur bedingt ausstehen können. Es gibt auch immer wieder ein paar Rückblicke, um auch als jemand, der die vorherige Reihe nicht gelesen hat, gut mit kommt und nachvollziehen kann, wieso die Dinge sind wie sie sind. Kurz herunter gebrochen haben wir hier eine Bodyguard Romance im Academia Setting und damit hatte ich definitiv meinen Spaß. Mir war die Liebelei allerdings einen Tick zu drüber und hier hätte man definitiv etwas runterfahren können, gleichzeitig fand ich das plötzliche Ende auch sehr an den Haaren herbei gezogen. Weiß noch nicht, ob ich die Reihe weiter verfolgen werde. Fands zwar unterhaltsam, aber nicht überragend gut.
Only a good way into the book did I realize that there was another series by the author that could now be seen as a prequel to Iron and Embers. However, I did not have the feeling of missing out. So I'd say totally readable without prior knowledge. It's a Romantasy book where the romance and spice does not take away from the plot - and if you've followed my previous reviews, that's high praise from me.
On top of that, Wren is a really strong character, and not just the 'oh I'm so chosen' type. The MMC, Torj, is also a very good protagonist - and behold the wonder: these two actually have chemistry. And somehow the author has managed to make it slow burn despite early spice scenes. The best of it all though is the worldbuilding. It's intriguing, it's rich, and definitely full-fledged (now knowing that there's more books in the world, I'm not surprised anymore, yet no less in awe). The plot twists and the ending are not too surprising, if you are familiar with these kind of fantasy books, but for me it didn't take away from the love I developed for this book. The audiobook is really good and gives the dual POV even more charme. Both narrators are magnificent and managed to make every minute, every sentence count. Herzzerreisend & ereignisreich, vorhersehbar aber nichts desto trotz spannend
Die Geschichte von Wren und Torj bahnte sich bereits in der vorhergehenden Reihe "Die Legenden von Thezmarr" an und ich habe mich sehr darauf gefreut. Der Beginn war für mich allerdings überraschend, da ich nicht mit einer Entfremdung gerechnet hatte. Auch die Wege der beiden hatte ich mir Richtung Thron von Delmira vorgestellt, aber diese Wendung macht viel mehr Sinn. Nachdem ich nun quasi die gesamte Reihe "Die Legenden von Thezmarr" auf diese Liebesgeschichte gewartet habe, geht mir die Lovestory zu langsam, aber es verzögert sich zu Gunsten der größeren Konfliktentwicklung außerhalb ihrer Beziehung. Ein neuer Feind aller Reiche taucht auf, und der Höhepunkt, der einen massiven Cliffhanger mit sich bringt, war bereits ab Mitte des Buches vorherzusagen. Der Cliffhanger selbst allerdings hat mich zerstört. Da ich so in der Lovestory gefangen war, habe ich das nicht kommen sehen. Es gibt die eine oder andere spicy Szene, aber insgesamt fühlt es sich nicht "zu viel" an. Ich habe die vollständige vorhergehende Reihe, sowie den Einzelband "Slaying the Shadow Prince" vorher gelesen und muss sagen, dass die Beschreibung der gegenseitigen Gefühle und Bedürfnisse in den spicy Momenten immer gleich ist. Hier würde ich mir pro Charakter bzw. Paar mehr Unterschiedlichkeit wünschen. Sobald dieser Post gesendet ist, werde ich mit dem zweiten Teil beginnen...
Great start
I received this book in a monthly subscription box and didn’t know the author or the previous series at all. But the blurb sounded promising, so I started reading it, and it didn’t disappoint one bit. The story was exciting, the characters were great, and it had just the right pace throughout the whole book. I can’t wait for the second book after that ending! I was definitely able to read and enjoy it without knowing the previous series set in the same world, and now I’m really curious about those books. Although Iron and Embers did spoil a bit of The Legends of Thezmarr, I’m sure I’ll come back to those books at some point.
