I love New Zealand. After living and working there for three months, it is the country of countries for me. If I had the opportunity, I would emigrate to New Zealand right away! At the beginning of the year I had the feeling that I should definitely read some family sagas. Besides the usual suspects like Ken Follett and Jeffrey Archer I also discovered - or should I say "rediscovered"? - Sarah Lark's New Zealand series. In fact, my mother had already read the series. We were in New Zealand together in 2018 (first time for her, second time for me) and our tour guide had warmly recommended the series to us. Mom was also thrilled after reading the series and hey - a book set in my favorite country. I had to read that. All in all I liked the book very much. The two protagonists Helen and Gwyneira are both very charming and lovable characters in their own way. Helene seemed very naive at times, but that suited her very well and did not seem out of character. Gwyn, on the other hand, got on my nerves quite a bit from time to time, as I had the feeling that she lost more and more of her "wildness" and adapted more and more to the circles she moved in after she came to New Zealand. This also fits to her character, I just thought it was a pity. I found the story of the two very exciting from the beginning. However, it's a pity that the main focus is on Gywn and you hardly get to know anything of Helen's life after the two arrived in New Zealand. I would have liked the lives of the two women to be illuminated chapter by chapter - chapter one is about Helen, chapter two about Gwyn and so on and so forth. Lark made New Zealand and the charm of the country a good part of the story - I was about to book a flight to New Zealand (which was of course invalid - thanks to Covid and my account). I also thought it was great that during the course of the book we also learned how the girls Helen had been teaching during the crossing were doing. I'm really curious how things will continue and if the second book of the saga will enchant me as much as the first one did. And I really hope we hear more from James McKenzie.
