Do you know what they're hiding in the house next door?
A woman and child are found locked in a basement, barely alive, and unidentifiable: the woman can't speak, there are no missing persons reports that match their profile, and the confused, elderly man who owns the house claims he has never seen them before. The inhabitants of the quiet street are in shock--how could this happen right under their noses? But Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows nothing is impossible. And no one is as innocent as they seem.
As the police grow desperate for a lead, Fawley stumbles across a breakthrough, a link to a case he worked years before about another young woman and child gone missing, never solved. When he realizes the missing woman's house is directly adjacent to the house in this case, he thinks he might have found the connection that could bring justice for both women. But there's something not quite right about the little boy from the basement, and the truth will send shockwaves through the force that Fawley never could have anticipated.
A deeply unsettling, heart-stopping mystery of long-buried secrets and the monsters who hide in plain sight, In the Dark is the second gripping novel featuring DI Adam Fawley.

What really happened in that Oxford cellar…?
By sheer chance, a young woman and a small boy are discovered barely alive in the cellar of an old house in Oxford. The owner—an elderly man suffering from dementia—has no idea who they are or how they got there. As DI Adam Fawley and his team begin to dig deeper, another case unexpectedly starts to resurface… In the Dark is a mystery that unfolds slowly at first, but once the initial threads begin to unravel, the pace picks up nicely. What makes this book special is its structure: told through multiple perspectives, a mix of first- and third-person narration, as well as elements like interview transcripts and newspaper clippings. This is slightly demanding at times, but keeps things engaging and fresh. I picked this up at the library without realising it was the second book in a series, but it worked well as a standalone. All in all, it was an okay read. Nothing terrible, but nothing outstanding either.
Intelligente Wendungen

this ain’t it
Normally, i’d give this book maybe 3.5 Stars but i gotta say, her books need major TW at the beginning. this book was so hard to read, at some points i had to put it down because i thought i was gonna throw up. the graphic detail of rape in this book is horrifying and the readers need to be made aware of that. Also, again, the ending mate, was so fucking unsatisfying and so annoying. would not recommend
Wow. My head was spinning - how do you even come up with such a case and are able to wrap it up so well?! Fawley is the best boss, he sees everything that's going on in his team. I love the style of these books with the texts, social media, interrogation protocols, crime scene sketches, and different POVs. That Adam Fawley is in first person and the rest of the cast has a third person POV makes these books special. I'm immediately on to the next book!
