This is my first Kinsey Millhone novel. I understand that this is a series and had some reservation about starting with the letter I. However, upon reading, it felt like I did not miss anything which is good for new readers like me but could be bad for linear and loyal readers waiting for a plot pay-off or follow-up. I found Kinsey instantly likeable. She is very similar to another female detective I enjoy, the newer DD Warren. Both are no nonsense, tough talking single women. Kinsey is the better detective though. Sue's writing for this book is wonderful. She wrote with a steadiness and competency of someone experienced. I am aware that this could come across as formulaic but this is my first book of the series and I can't pass judgment as of yet on that regard. There are times wherein I felt like she was possessed by the spirit of Victor Hugo. Her descriptions for the settings are very very detailed and varied. I enjoy these very much. The story here is good and the investigation method not all over the place. Everything is clear at the end and there are no loose threads. This book is not noir in any stretch. I'm happy that I gave I is for Innocent a chance. These pop-up often in secondhand bookstores. Should be easy to collect. If you enjoy a procedural, this is a solid choice. Recommended!
