I read some of James Herbert's novels before I started this one and liked them well enough, so this one was a bit of a disappointment. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the translation - I read it in German - or not. But the style was pretty much overblown, full of bad comparisons and figures of speech and the like. There was a lot of head-hopping, too - something I think all authors are told to avoid at all costs. All in all, the style of the book reminded me of a 70s B-movie and once I got around to accept that and the slight cringe-worthiness of it all, I got to enjoy it to a certain degree. I don't want to give the plot away and have to admit that the idea itself wasn't half bad but the execution could have been better. I also had a hard time feeling close or particularly drawn to any o the main characters, even David Ash, the hero of the book, a sceptical ghost hunter who is on a mission to prove that the supernatural does not exist, remained strangely distant. I only have a vague idea of him as a human being i my mind, somehow he's ore of a stereotype than an actual character. Nevertheless, it's an easy read but it's not really something I would recommend to my friends.
