Description

From the bestselling author of the generation-defining classic Fight Club comes an utterly contemporary, appallingly entertaining tale of people desperate to tell their story at any cost.

“To Palahniuk’s credit, there is something here to appall almost every sensibility. The author has a singular knack for coming up with inventive new ways to shock and degrade.” —The New York Post

Haunted is a novel made up of twenty-three horrifying, hilarious, and stomach-churning stories. They’re told by people who have answered an ad for a writer’s retreat and unwittingly joined a “Survivor”-like scenario where the host withholds heat, power, and food. As the storytellers grow more desperate, their tales become more extreme, and they ruthlessly plot to make themselves the hero of the reality show that will surely be made from their plight. This is one of the most disturbing and outrageous books you’ll ever read, one that could only come from the mind of Chuck Palahniuk.

Whoa, I really loved this one. It’s completely sick and unnerving and at the same time makes me think a lot. It has much truth in it, even though it (hopefully) exaggerates.

It’s giving “I’m 14 and this is deep.” All the pseudo-intellectual messaging of the 2010s “Russian Sleep Experiment” creepypasta, except this is 400 pages, for some reason. Also, maybe it’s my fault for having unsupervised internet access during the age of LiveLeak, but there’s virtually nothing in this book that warrants it being touted as one of the most disturbing books out there.
