Description

The first book in a pulse-pounding new series that’s set in the world of the #1 New York Times bestselling I Am Number Four series. The war may be over—but for the next generation, the battle has just begun! It has been over a year since the invasion of Earth was thwarted in Pittacus Lore’s United as One. But in order to win, our alien allies known as the Garde unleashed their Loric energy that spread throughout the globe. Now human teenagers have begun to develop incredible powers of their own, known as Legacies. To help these incredible and potentially dangerous individuals—and put the world at ease—the Garde have created an academy where they can train this new generation to control their powers and hopefully one day help mankind. But not everyone thinks that’s the best use of their talents. And the teens may need to use their Legacies sooner than they ever imagined. Perfect for fans of Marvel’s X-Men and Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave, this epic new series follows a diverse cast of teens as they struggle to hone their abilities and decide what, if anything, they should do with them. As a spin-off of the bestselling I Am Number Four series, those familiar with the original books and newcomers alike will devour this fast-paced, action-packed sci-fi adventure.

So. I've read all seven books of the Lorien Legacies over the last few months. I didn't know the series only ended in 2016 and now this book came out just a year later? Lorien Legacies fans really are well fed with all the books and novellas coming out constantly! Anyway, Lorien Legacies wasn't bad for me-- it was okay. I liked some things more and some things less. Overall, I just didn't have characters I was super attached to, which I always need because I love character-driven stories and characters > plot for me, but I just couldn't link with the Garde from LL. That's why I actually didn't think I'd pick this book up. I did only like 30 minutes after I finished "United as One" because I hoped to see more of Daniela, who was towards the end of LR my favorite character but we didn't see much of her. She wasn't in this book but that's totally okay because I fell in love with all the other characters here! I also really liked Ran in the LR so I'm glad she's a MC. And how much I love them. I can barely rank the characters, the so-called Fugitive Six, because I really love all of them so much! They're all refreshing and I love them all so much, from their backstories where each of them had their own, to their personalities and the friendships? It really has my favorite trope of a mismatched Squad finding each other to the Found Family trope... I mean the OG LR had that too but here I was REALLY into the Characters. Maybe because you can connect more to the characters. They're not aliens-- they're just humans who had the luck or misfortune, however you see it, to be chosen and be Human Garde. And I'm also so stoked how diverse it is! As opposed to the LR, which makes sense more since the series is older and YA was different then as it is now. I love how we get all these Gardes from different countries and places all over the world, it's so diverse and rich. And even LGBT rep! I hope we get more characters who fall under that soon. And Caleb with his DID, how he struggles with it and is an outside but then finds his place with the rest of the Fugitive Six... He is probably my favorite character but I can't really say that because I really do love each and every single one of them. Even the villains! Einer was so interesting and Rabiya as well, I love them both. I want to see more of their group, as well of Jiao. I loved the characters and the plot so much I can't describe it. Especially as a long time comic fan... This really is like X-Men. And now, let me let out my inner comic nerd, the Human Garde is essentially X-Men and NuHumans (from Marvel) combined. The NuHuman aspect - mystic entity from an alien planet giving young people all over the world powers suddenly out of nowhere -> the Terrigen mist from the InHumans (also technically aliens) giving them powers out of nowhere - the InHumans are here the Lorien Garde (John, Six, and co) and NuHumans are the Human Garde X-Men - except for the very obvious aspects - the Academy (which is a great bonus because I LOVE boarding school settings) - the book really reads like a New Mutants or Generation X (Even the Name...) story - The Harvesters have a big parallel with the Mutant Purifiers... I don't know if anyone cares for this but I just really thought it was interesting and I liked it. Also the different powers.... I could honestly rave for this book even more but I loved the Character development as well and there's just... so much here to talk about. I wish I could recommend this series to so many people but honestly, as a lot of spin-offs can be read on its own without the former story being told, I think this one's harder. Yeah, I guess you COULD do it but I feel like it's... it would confuse a lot of people so reading the Lorien Legacies first would be recommended and imo needed. Still, wish people would give this more love. LR has a lot of content and books out there constantly, the fandom's just dead lmao Anyway, 5 Stars, can't wait to get my hands on the second novel!
