'I adore everything about it . . . the perfect blend of mystery and romcom' ALI HAZELWOOD
Single mum and struggling crime writer Finlay Donovan is ready to kill someone by 7.45AM:
- Her two-year-old is slathered in maple syrup
- Her four-year-old has a new self-inflicted haircut
- Her TOTALLY VINDICTIVE ex-husband has fired the nanny without warning
But nothing is going to stop her from making it to lunch with her literary agent.
Not even being banned from the restaurant they're meeting at.
When the discussion about Finlay's latest crime novel is misinterpreted by a woman sitting nearby as the plans of a hit-woman offering up her services, Finlay is finally promised the large sum of cash she's always hoped for. Just not for her writing.
For this, she'll need to plot something much bigger than her novel.
They do always say: write what you know. . .
Murder, mayhem and - maybe - a touch of romance, the warm, hilarious and instantly-lovable Finlay Donovan series is perfect for fans of Emily Henry, Dial A for Aunties and Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.

This is a real quick and fun mystery/thriller. The story about Finlay and her involuntary involvement in the contract killing business is at first a little slow to pick up but a few chapters in I found it really fun and interesting to see how Finlay tries to be a good person but finds herself in more trouble along the way. In my opinion the story is not a proper thriller for the most part but a funny light mystery, which I really enjoyed! It’s not only the cover that stands out! I could really picture this as a fun movie or even a series! I loved the dynamic between Finlay and Vero and am very curious about how Finlay‘s love life will continue in the second book. Currently have have a preference but will have to wait until I get to the second book! ✨ 4/5 stars ✨

4 stars I enjoyed reading / listening to this so much! It's just such a fun book. The plot is a little over-the-top, but in a really fun way, that wasn't too much for me. Loved all the characters and their dynamics - Finlay & Vero + Finlay + Julian? Actually rooted for the love story in here, which is kind of rare for me. Looking forward to read book 2 soon!
From the first page on, no the first SENTENCE on, I already knew I was going to love this book. It was recommended by quite a few people on BookTube the past few weeks, and this book is 100% worth the hype. The plot intrigued me so much, and once I started it I couldn't put it down again, making me read this in 2 days, which is CRAZY considering I am still burdened by a reading slump atm. The main character is relatable and super lovable, and as the reader, I was really concerned for her throughout the whole book. The secondary characters were amazing too, some more so than others, but all of them really complemented the story and the development of our main character very well. Not going to lie, I thought I knew what was going on pretty early in the book, but it still managed to surprise me with the twists throughout the whole book. I am so glad to have found out that this will be turned into a series since I cannot wait for the other shenanigans Finlay will be up to in other books!
So in a post-apocalyptic type of world, the humans have been overthrown by the Orcs. They were treated badly by the Orcs who invaded their world and most are now living in camps, run by Orcs. Our main girl, Kari lives in one of those camps, or more like she survives. She's adopted a mixed human-Orc baby a few years ago and is now raising him. This is what lands her in a bit of a situation when her son is taken from her and she's asked to chose a father for him from a lineup of Orcs. What ends up happening is that she actually chose a mate for herself along with a dad for her son. I think this is the worst summary I've ever written and doesn't do the plot justice at all. I'm sorry. This was genuinely a good book, the plot was interesting, rooted in processing and coping with trauma. Kari went though a lot and yet stayed generous enough to adopt another woman's baby and then she was resilient enough to deal with everything that goes on in this book. I really liked her. I also loved all the interactions with the children and the secondary characters. I thought Bear was very sweet and he really worked hard to earn Kari's love and he did. Things weren't perfect but things did happen and I saw a lot of people say they didn't see the chemestry between the 2 but I disagree. I recommend if you like alien romance and if mentions of sexual assaults don't bother you. I'll probably be reading the sister novel in the future
