The rape that happened in this book, because it just jumps out as a surprise bothered me. We are given no information about the type of relationship between the girl and the man. And when it’s over he’s like, go clean up and we’ll have dinner. It’s not acceptable that if this person was so great all these years that she knew him, the one time he gets drunk he would attack her like this. There should have been a discussion of the character of this person before this act happened, because not every drunk man is a rapist. It bothers me that everything that happens after the tragic rape event reads to me like comedy: Her needing a pregnancy test and having her friend ask if the baby is her boyfriend’s. I didn’t see any of this as painful or serious, but just as really funny. I don’t think the book handled the subject in the right way. It just had some "facts/trauma" in it so the main character would have some issues to get over. I just kept waiting for the next "problem" this event would cause her, such as her friend asking her if she is having an abortion. Anyone else would have said "yes of course," but not this character! This character is having her dad’s baby and for some reason she can’t wait! She is talking about how much she wants to nurture and love the baby, like it’s the gift she has been waiting for all her life!!! She has a full scholarship to college, but she is of course turning down the scholarship, and OF COURSE having the baby! "You can’t take a baby to college." The only sensible thing she says is, “I’ll never be a parent who hurts my child.” So it’s nice to know she has a new mission in life. The only reason to keep reading the book is to get to the scene where she has to tell the child who the father is. More comedy!
