His own desire is to reclaim his long lost lands and castle to the north. But the challenge to him, as the king's warrior, is that he knows that he will either be the means of making Alfred's dream of a united and Christian England come to pass or be responsible for condemning it to oblivion.

Ich mag die Uhtred-Reihe eigentlich sehr gern. Bernard Cornwell schafft es immer wieder - und so auch hier - die Atmosphäre Englands dieser Zeit einzufangen. So wie alles beschrieben ist, kann man sich so wunderbar in die Situation hineinversetzen. Auch die grundsätzliche Handlung und vor allem den Teil der konkreten englischen Geschichte finde ich immer wieder spannend und sehr gut gemacht und dargestellt. In diesem Band stellte sich für mich allerdings der Einstieg als schwierig dar. Vieles war verwirrend und der Sinn, alles am Anfang so ausführlich darzustellen, erschloss sich mir bis zum Ende nicht. Es zog sich und noch dazu nervte mich Uhtreds Gerede rund um die Handlung sowie sein teilweise völlig aus dem Zusammenhang gerissenes unpassendes Verhalten etwas. Durch die erste Hälfte musste ich mich wirklich schleppen, doch als dann die Geschichte endlich mehr Fahrt aufnahm, wurde es wieder der Uhtred, den ich kenne und mag, und konnte das Lesen wieder mehr genießen.
