City of Souls and Sinners is exactly the kind of dark, immersive, emotionally seismic fantasy that reminds me why I read. Kayla Edwards has crafted a world brimming with magic, moral complexity, and love that both heals and destroys — and I was absolutely here for every minute of it. From the first page, the stakes are turned all the way up. Angelthene feels alive and dangerous — magic is beautiful and brutal, and every secret carries a price. The narrative pulls you into the tangled web of politics, power struggles, and supernatural chaos that constantly keeps your heart racing. And Darien? Oh, yes, we are absolutely getting a morally black (and gloriously tortured) Darien. His internal struggles — balancing inherited darkness, addictive temptations, and the weight of leadership — are some of the most compelling character work I’ve read in the genre. He’s not a villain, but he walks so close to the edge that I couldn’t look away, constantly questioning what it means to protect the ones you love without becoming the monster you fear. Loren’s arc is equally gripping: stripped of power and forced into impossible choices, she grows in courage and resilience in ways that are both heartbreaking and empowering. The emotional depth here isn’t just dialogue — it’s felt deep in your chest on every twist, loss, and tender moment. This book doesn’t just build tension — it sustains it with layers of intrigue, dark magic, gut-wrenching sacrifice, and a romance that burns just as brightly as the battles raging around it. If you love dark fantasy with morally grey heroes, terrifying world-building, and a love story that refuses to be quiet, this delivers in spades. I finished this feeling exhilarated, emotionally wrecked, and absolutely desperate for the next installment. Five stars — and then some. 🌒💔🔥
