Beautiful but also truly devastating πŸ’”

Set in a beautiful nursing home we follow Maya and her husband who came to Australia in the 80s in order to escape the violence of Sri Lanka and build a new life Westgrove, Sydney. They care deeply about their residents and do everything they can to make each and everyone feel loved and cherished by cooking their favorite childhood dishes and offering all kinds of cultural activities. At the beginning it starts of as a rather cozy read with a lot of humor and love for life but there are many tragedies hidden beneath the surface. As the story progresses we learn about the hardships the family had do endure over decades - from the war in Sri Lanka to the racism in modern-day Australia. This book is a multi-generational story written from different POVs and it goes back and forth between the present as well as past decades, portraying many tragedies and challenges along the way. In the present Anji, Maya's daughter, may have an easier life than her parents but she has to deal with increasing violence and racism against the nursing home and it's residents due to many immigrants living and working there. Things quickly turn into a full-blown social media outrage and we see how easily the opinion of the public can be influenced. A beautiful and powerful story about family, colonialism, racism and the power of social media. Truly a story I will never forget! I'd definitely recommend it for fans of Pachinko. ⚠️ Some parts are rather gruesome, so it's advised to check content warnings.
