Description

Veronica wants nothing more than to find her brother, who sailed away years ago. But when Veronica's ship is captured by pirates, she's determined to save her own skin, while keeping her magic and her gender a secret. Disguised as male, she finagles a spot as a cabin boy aboard the buccaneers' vessel--which is bound for Ravensbeck, a stronghold where the Pirate King holds sway. He may have the answers Veronica seeks--but getting those answers could cost her more than she's willing to pay.

Things I liked about this book: The story was overall very enjoyable. I especially like the whole "FMC pretends to be a man/boy" concept. Super exciting to watch her go through this whole thing while hiding this big secret. Her magical power was also very interesting. Things I didn't like: There was a scene where she's the embodiment of Too Stupid To Live. Thankfully it's not the whole book, but that scene made me livid. Why the HELL does she ask the captain to spare the sailors they're attacking? Not only does she know perfectly well that she's on a pirate ship and that's just what they do, not only does she also know she has absolutely zero power on that ship or over the captain, but he had also had the MMC flogged (in her place) for a small misstep she just didn't know any better about, and she decides to try to tell him what to do? Girl, what? At least talk to MMC about it, not the guy who'll definitely punish you. Another singular but kind of important scene was after they had sex for the first time. Imagine your lover says "It was good, and now it's over" IMMEDIATELY afterwards. I don't fault her for her feelings and thoughts, but just how she said those things aloud right afterwards is needlessly hurtfeal and mean. The MMC is also kinda problematic. The rule to basically kill all women on the ships they attack (though by the sea, not by their own hands) is... not ideal. I don't know if "It's better than being raped" sounds as good as MMC thought it does. That storypart in itself isn't a problem, since FMC addresses the issue and the rules are getting chained at the end, so all good, but it made me like MMC a little less that he didn't care to do anything better about it himself. Yeah, he's a "big bad pirate", but overall he felt like a softie with some problematic beliefs. Still, even with the issues I had with this book, I overall enjoyed it.
