By Fate I Conquer by Cora Reilly - definitely not as I expected! 3.5 stars I don't think there's a book I've waited this long for. I’ve been in a reading slump and this book pulled me right out of it! Read the whole thing in one setting… As soon as Cora announced the couple, I was so exited and I couldn’t wait for its release. However, the book was very different from what I imagined and expected... The first chapters of the book were very intriguing. I loved how both characters were introduced. You got a glimpse into their world and their personalities right away. Amo is exactly as I imagined him. Funny, charming, strong willed and impulsive. Practically a perfect mix of Luca and Matteo. The meeting with Nevio was also exactly as I expected: Heated! Greta was also interesting for me as a character from the beginning, because she is very different from the other previous heroines. I was very happy to get to know a neuro-diverse girl in this story. Unfortunately, I found that her nature and her character somehow dissolved in the course of the book. Of her reserved, special nature, you somehow did not get much at the end, which I found very unfortunate and a little bit inauthentic. I also had a difficult time to understand their "instalove". I mean yeah, the very few and very short encounters that they shared were very sweet, but not enough to fall in love. Maybe it's just me, but nahhh I didn't feel the vibe... Moreover, the story was dragged a little here and there and some actions/plots could’ve been cut short. There should've been more reasonings for true star-crossed-lover storyline. It was forbidden love. But how forbidden was it really? Plot-wise the book somehow has not exceeded or even met my expectations in any case - unfortunately! Again, what did I like: I liked Amo and Geta as characters, I liked that Luca's, Aria's and Remo's POVs were a part of the book. I liked how Amo dealt with Greta. That loving, honest way between the two of them. I love, love, LOVE Cora's writing style. She is simply one of the best! You just easily flow through the book. However, there are also things that kind of disappointed me. Firstly, the length of the book. It was kind of unnecessarily long, some parts were superfluous (and aghh just not it) and the book could have been condensed significantly. Beyond that, I think I just wished for a different plot and different circumstances. Was the story heartbreaking? In some way it was, but in some ways it wasn't. Lol. I feel with a different story and different circumstances my heart ache would’ve been bad. In a good way... And my understanding for both of their actions would’ve been stronger. I really believe that the crux was the lack of understanding for their instalove. In Twisted Pride, I really got the connection between Remo and Sarafina and Sarafinas reasoning to leave her family. My heart really broke for her, her brother and the rest of her family. In Bound By Temptation, I also got the connection between Lily and Romero and why they wanted to be together. However, with Amo and Greta there was a little magic missing... at least for me! Also was the book as dark as advertised? No. Nothing beats Twisted Pride (her best book by the way)!!! Lastly, I think my (partial) disappointment is pretty self-inflicted, as I've been eagerly anticipating this book for months and could hardly wait. I thought that By Fate I Conquer would awaken and revive old Twisted Pride memories. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Of course, it's still a good book and if it wasn't by Cora, I would certainly be more lenient in my rating. But with Cora, I just have different expectations, cause I adore the world she built so, so much! Nonetheless, I give the book 3.5 stars. Maybe 4. For that, I'll have to read it again with a little break in between. To get over the fact, that this isn't her greatest book of all time... sigh In any case, I will lower my expectations significantly for the releases to come. Then I no longer will be disappointed ...
5 ⭑ “Right now, right here, it’s only us. This is our moment. Pretend the world ends tomorrow” one of my most anticipated reads this year and i finally could read it and it definitely didn’t disappointed me. i was scared that cora reilly is gonna destroy the beautiful family bond they all share but luckily she didn't.
